History

Chat2Safety was born not in a boardroom, but out of lived experience and quiet urgency.

It was born out of necessity, shaped by the lived, observed, and vicarious experience of Oladipo Akinmade. Years of working, living, and traveling across Nigeria as a Public Health and development professional exposed him to a troubling pattern that repeated itself from state to state: incidents of violence rising steadily, most going unaccounted for, and the public left with little more than fleeting media headlines long after the mortalities were counted. What was consistently missing was not compassion or concern, but data-informed action — the vital information communities need to prevent, prepare for, and respond to violence before it escalates.

That gap became the catalyst for Chat2Safety, which took shape as an important part of his doctoral research project in Epidemiology — leveraging the power of technology and the power of community. But the platform’s DNA reaches beyond epidemiology alone. As a programme management professional whose interests sit squarely at the intersection of digital transformation, community participation, global health and development, Oladipo approached the problem not as a purely academic exercise, but as a design challenge: how do you build systems where technology and people strengthen each other, rather than one simply serving the other? The result is a philosophy that runs through everything Chat2Safety does — that meaningful digital transformation cannot happen at a distance from the communities it’s meant to serve, and that community participation, in turn, becomes far more powerful when backed by the right digital tools.

That overlap — between grassroots involvement and digitally-enabled systems — is where Chat2Safety lives. It is what turns ordinary citizens from passive witnesses to violence into active contributors to the data and decisions that help prevent it, and what transforms a research project into a living, evolving platform: one built to close the distance between incident and insight, between silence and support, between vulnerability and safety. It reflects a broader commitment to solving important problems by creating future-forward solutions — ones that put communities at the center of the technologies designed to protect them.

Strategy

Chat2Safety takes a deliberately solution-focused approach to safety — one that treats everyone not as a bystander to harm, but as an active partner in preventing it. Our strategy rests on a simple conviction: that public and community engagement, powered by the right technology, is the most effective force multiplier against incidents that threaten people’s lives and wellbeing — whatever form those incidents take.
Rather than treating reporting, data, education, and response as separate efforts, we design them as one connected system — so that every voice raised becomes evidence, every piece of evidence becomes insight, and every insight strengthens the next response. This system is intentionally built to be domain-agnostic and geography-agnostic: while our initial focus is violence, the same architecture is designed to extend to natural disasters, accidents, and other threats to safety, in communities well beyond where we begin.

How We Work

We bring the strategy to life through eight interlocking pillars:

Reporting

We make it effortless for anyone to report incidents in real time — through a mobile-friendly interface, integrated social media channels, and a dedicated website — so that no incident goes unaccounted for and no community is left invisible in the data.

Education

We translate data and lived experience into accessible knowledge — prevention strategies, safety guidance, and health education — empowering the public to recognize risk, respond appropriately, and protect themselves and one another.

Advocacy

We give voice to those affected and their communities, connecting them with local authorities, support services, and advocacy groups, while pushing for accountability and sustained attention on issues that too often fade from the headlines.

Policy Influence

Beyond the individual and community level, Chat2Safety aggregates evidence to inform policy — equipping institutions and authorities with the data required to shape smarter legislation, allocate resources effectively, and design interventions that reflect the realities on the ground rather than assumptions from a distance.

Surveillance & Monitoring

Reports feed into an interactive dashboard that continuously tracks trends, hotspots, and statistics, including Open-Source Intelligence, giving individuals, communities, institutions, and authorities the situational awareness they need to detect emerging risks before they escalate.

Edutainment

We believe safety messaging shouldn’t feel like a lecture. We reach people where they already are, using creative, innovative entertainment — including games — to make learning about safety engaging, memorable, and even fun. From interactive scenarios to gamified experiences, we turn passive awareness into active understanding, helping vital information stick long after the moment it was shared.

Inform & Empower

By synthesizing real-time data into clear, actionable insight, we help individuals and institutions move from reaction to anticipation — planning ahead, allocating resources wisely, and making informed decisions grounded in evidence rather than assumption.

Prevention & Preparedness

We apply a layered, public-health approach to prevention, working across five levels:

Primordial prevention — addressing the root social, economic, and structural conditions that create the environment for harm to take hold.
Primary prevention — reducing exposure and risk before an incident occurs, through early warning signals, education, and community vigilance.
Secondary prevention — enabling rapid detection and response once an incident begins, minimizing harm and containing escalation.
Tertiary prevention — supporting recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration for those affected, and using lessons learned to prevent recurrence.
Quaternary prevention — protecting individuals and communities from the unintended harms of intervention itself, such as re-traumatization, stigmatization, or misuse of data, ensuring that every response upholds dignity and does no additional harm.

Alongside prevention, we equip individuals and institutions with practical preparedness tools — guidance, contacts, and protocols — so that when an incident does occur, the response is swift and coordinated rather than chaotic.

Together, these pillars form a continuous loop: engagement drives reporting, reporting fuels surveillance, surveillance informs prevention and policy, and education, edutainment, and advocacy sustain it all — building, incident by incident, safer and more resilient communities
